Changes to the Highway Code

Rule H1 requires drivers of bigger, heavier, harder, faster things to bear greater responsibility to take care and reduce the danger to smaller, lighter, softer, slower road users.

Rule H2 says that drivers, motorcyclists and cyclists should give way to pedestrians crossing or waiting to cross a road into which or from which they are turning. They should also give way to pedestrians waiting to cross at a Zebra crossing. This differs from the existing rules which only require the driver to give way if the pedestrian is already crossing.

Rule H3 says that drivers and motorcyclists should not cut across the path of a cyclist or horse rider when turning into or out of a junction. This applies whether the cyclists is on the road, cycle lane or cycle track.

These rules come into force on 29th January 2022.
